Best Virtual Assistant Training Courses (paid and free)

Today we’re talking all about Virtual Assistant Training. We have 8 courses we’re going to cover, each one falling within one of these categories:

  • How to start and run a Virtual Assistant business
  • All inclusive starting, running, growing, and learning in-demand Virtual Assistant skills
  • Stand-alone training course for in-demand services
  • Stand-alone course for finding clients

But do you really need Virtual Assistant training ?

Let me quickly answer that:

Virtual assistant training can get you closer to reaching your financial goals and work-independence faster than if you tried to figure it out on your own. The right virtual assistant course is well worth it because you won’t have to go through the frustration of figuring out your next steps or making costly mistakes.

That being said, we’re going to take a look at the best virtual assistant training options suitable for beginners. We’ll go over the features, learning material and pricing plans.

Let’s dive into my list of the best VA training, paid and free.

What to Look for in a Beginner-Level Training Course

Because you’re just starting out as a new Virtual Assistant, you want to start at the beginning. Here are the 3 most important things to look for when picking a course:

1️⃣ How to get started

It’s important to know how to set-up your business for success from learning basic strategies to creating contracts, and onboarding clients. The best training course will go into detail on how to start a real business and offer in-demand service ideas.

2️⃣ Where to get work

One of the hardest parts to starting a Virtual Assistant career is finding work and clients that consistently seek your service. A really good Virtual Assistant training program has a designated job leads community that’s active and available to students for at least 6 months.

3️⃣ Ongoing support

Support is very important for anyone starting a new career path from scratch. VA training programs that provide support – during the time you’re doing the course and after – is essential for success. The best training courses readily have access to the course creator or mentors as well as an active community (usually Facebook) of Virtual Assistants offering their tips and advice.

Best Virtual Assistant Training Courses for Beginners

MY TOP PICKS (a combination of the three best options to be a successful Virtual or Administrative Assistant):

1️⃣ FULLY BOOKED VA, for learning how to start, operate, and grow a VA business.

2️⃣ SAVVY VAULT, to learn the in-demand services Virtual Assistnats and Admin. Assistants are hired to do.

3️⃣ HOW TO FIND YOUR FIRST VIRTUAL ASSISTANT CLIENT, to get the inside scoop on getting your first (or several) clients.

Virtual Assistant Training Course Reviews:

#1 Fully Booked VA – VA FOUNDATIONS

Key Features:

  • This course consists of 12 modules (main learning points) and 18 lessons (specific to each module).
  • You get LIFETIME ACCESS to all training material contained within the Foundations program.
  • Certification once you complete the course.
  • You also get access to jobs and client leads free for 3 months (with the option to continue receiving leads).
  • The Facebook community is very active, offering assistance and tips.
  • Included are 18 turn-key templates and worksheets.
  • Lifetime money-back guarantee.

What I Like:

Because this is a thorough course taught by pros in the field, what you learn will let you become a Virtual Assistant in any business sector. I was able to go through the training on my time, which took just under 10 weeks (a few hours a day for 5 days a week), and go back through some of the lessons whenever I needed to.

What I Don’t Like:

Even though there is a money-back guarantee, you do have to go through the entire course to become certified. But in all honesty, is certification really worth it ? I come across many Administrative Assistant jobs that don’t require certification but if you’re starting a Virtual Assistant business, then certification is an attractive marker companies look for. And I wish there were specific niche training courses included. Fully Booked VA has a few niche courses but they cost extra.

Fully Booked VA Review:

Fully Booked VA is an in-depth training program that goes over the three main aspects to starting and running a successful Virtual Assistant business: STARTING your business, BUILDING your business, and SCALING your VA business.

1️⃣ START, which takes you step-by-step through the process of launching your VA biz: from choosing and pricing your services, managing clients, getting paid, and setting yourself up for long-term success.

2️⃣ BUILD, where you learn how to go from beginner to pro, going over all the necessary legal issues and business knowledge.

3️⃣ SCALE, which is all about growing your expertise…and income.

And once you complete the entire course, you get your Virtual Assistant CERTIFICATION.

I found each module and lesson to be well organized, flowing nicely into the next.

These are the things you’ll learn right off the bat:

▶ ‘Craft your plan’, setting business goals and focusing on your plan.
▶ Create proposals, contracts and boundaries.
▶ Manage clients and evaluate your relationships.
▶ Streamline your business and become more efficient.
▶ Grow your income and raise your rates.

And, as you move through the course, you learn:

▶ What legal options you have.
▶ How to find clients.
▶ What documents are needed and how to use them.
▶ How to create an online presence to find more clients

Once you’ve completed the course, you get your certification, which is a good “selling point” for gaining new clients.

So all-in-all, Fully Booked VA IS a great Virtual Assistant training course, walking you through everything you need to know to get started as a VA. However, it does lack niche training. It’s one thing to know how to start a business, it’s another thing to offer the right services.

But don’t worry because Fully Booked VA does offer these niche-service training…at an added cost of $197.00

Fully Booked VA Skills Training

$497.00 (or 5 payments of $99.00). This includes lifetime access to the training course, 3 months of support AND job leads, several free templates and certification.

$300.00 annually (or $180 ever 6 months) (after the first 3 months) for continued access to client leads and ongoing support.

I think what I like best about this Virtual Assistant training is how comprehensive it is. Besides all the step-by-steps, templates, support, and additional niche training, there is a large database of clients looking for VA’s to hire. The creator, Abby Ashley, tells it like it is – no hype. I feel like she really knows her stuff and honestly wants to help us succeed.

What I Don’t Like:

A little pricey and there is some up-selling.

The platform is very easy to navigate and has a few extra steps showing some productivity tools and tips. All the skills are highly-requested by SavvySystem clients so I feel confident learning them will make me a more in-demand VA.

Also a positive: skills training are added on a regular basis.

What I Don’t Like:

The only complaint I have is the fact I probably could find free videos for all the individual skills. BUT, I wouldn’t have access to all the top skills in one place, and the free videos I did take were lacking some vital information.

SavvyVault Review:

SavvyVault is all about advanced tech and skills training, with 80+ training courses that are focused on the most in-demand skills. It’s the perfect companion to any Virtual Assistant training program you have already taken and is included in the SavvySystem Ultimate course we wrote about above.

SavvyVault is a monthly membership and new courses are added regularly so you can always be on top of the most-requested VA service.

You’ll also have access to tech support, the active Facebook community, and the marketing masterclass. And, last I checked, there was a lot of people on the FB group sharing some of their personal experiences.

When you first log into your SavvyVault dashboard, you’ll see the library which consists of the steps to get you started and the individual skills courses. The 3 starter steps aren’t necessary to do, but they do provide some good information on productivity tools. Whenever you’re ready to start a skills course, just click the ‘START COURSE’ button.

What I Like:

I like how it’s an easy-to-follow format and goes over the functions of getting started without being too simplified.

What I Don’t Like:

I wish it was more interactive and offered more support.

IAP Virtual Assistant Course Review:

Geared towards beginners, IAP (International Association of Professions) Career College offers affordable virtual assistant training that covers pretty much everything from understanding what a virtual assistant does through getting clients.

Although this course was created to allow you to complete it without any teaching assistance, you’re assigned a Faculty Member who you can contact at any time if you have questions or need assistance. But, you’re only allowed up to 3 hours total (throughout your course) to communicate with your Faculty Member. This may be a deal breaker if you like a little hand-holding when taking an online course.

If you want a course that covers more than the basics and benefits of being a Virtual Assistant, you’ll get that in this course. From choosing your niche, understanding your clients, and managing your time all the way through creating a business plan, learning marketing tools and techniques and selling your services, you end up being certified and ready to start your VA career.

There are specific start dates and the course lasts for 6 weeks. You can start at any point within the 6 weeks as long as you are finished by no later than 12 weeks from the scheduled start date. You can also choose what time of day to take the course – whenever it’s convenient to you. As far as how long it takes to complete, it can take anywhere from 4 to 12 weeks, depending on how many hours per day you put into it.

Here’s how to get started:

▶ Check to see when the next registration date is. Usually at least once a month enrollment.
▶ Register and pay for the course (via Paypal).
▶ Within an hour your registration is complete and you’re assigned an IAP Career College account.
▶ You’ll receive an email confirming your order and instructions on how to access your account and course materials.

Within your IAP account, you’ll find your .pdf file e-textbook. You follow along with the e-textbook, doing all the lessons, then make it to the final exam. When you complete – and then pass – the exam, you get your downloadable certificate.

#5 Must Have Tools For Virtual Assistants

  • You’ll have lifetime access to the course
  • On-demand video training
  • 30-day money-back guarantee

What I Like:

I like how organized this course is, giving pretty good detail about each tool recommended. It’s frequently updated is a new tool works better and the instructor explains why she doesn’t use certain tools. Also, one of the most over-looked aspects to running a VA business (or any business) is the contract. There’s a pretty good lesson covering contracts, why they’re important, and how to create one.

What I Don’t Like:

A little short. There are many tools out there and I would like to see more options for contract templates.

Must Have VA Tools Review:

Virtual Assistants need tools; tools for the everyday running of your business and tools specific to the service you provide. And in this 3.5 hour long online course, you’ll get honest input and recommendations for the best tools to use…from a Virtual Assistant in the business since 2012.

What I Like:

Oh goodness, there’s a lot of information here. Free ! And, for only a few dollars, there’s the option to buy high-end skills training.

What I Don’t Like:

I can’t think of anything.

The Techie Mentor Virtual Assistant Success System Review

The Techie Mentor is by far the best FREE virtual assistant training course available, with over 7 hours of video covering everything you need to know. In fact, the videos are split into 15 categories, making it super easy to follow.

To get started, you first have to supply your name and email to set up your login data. Then, once you get the confirmation email, follow the instructions to get onto the online training portal.

The training portal is laid out nicely, with 5 main categories. However, the only one you need to click on is the Free VA Training and Resources category. But feel free to go through the others.

Free Virtual Assistant Training: Techie Mentor

When you click on the Free VA Training and Resources category, you open each training video. From there, it’s as easy as picking a video and start watching.

There’s a lot to unpack in each video, and The Techie Mentor doesn’t disappoint. And, if you want to further your training, for a few dollars you can buy some niche-specific skills courses. #7 How to Find Your First Virtual Assistant Client

Best course to find Clients

How to Find Virtual Assistant Clients

Key Features:

  • Easy to follow lessons
  • Shows how to identify your ideal client and why it’s important
  • Lays-out where to locate your ideal clients and how to pitch your service to them
  • Goes into detail on standard operating procedures (SOP) for your virtual assistant business
  • 30-day money-back guarantee

What I Like:

Even though this is a short course, it really does cover a lot of things I never thought of. For instance, who do I really want to work with and why ? One of the most overlooked exercise to running a successful business is defining your Standard Operating Procedures. In lesson 9, What Are Standard Operating Procedures ? you learn how to set clear parameters and boundaries for your clients and why they are important.

What I Don’t Like:

I could nit-pick and say the lessons are a bit generic and don’t go into enough detail about specific types of clients. But in all honesty, it would be almost impossible to go into that much detail. What is covered will help you narrow down who you want to work with.

How to Find Your First VA Client Review:

Because this is a short course (1.5 hours of video training), I would only recommend buying it when it’s below $20.00. Most of what’s in this course can be found all over the internet but you have to be willing to look for it. And because of that, $20.00 isn’t too much to spend for some good information.

Starting with identifying and laying out your ideal client and ending with pitching your services, there really is a lot of thinking you have to do to narrow-down who you want to work with.

Once you get a clear image of the type of client you want to work with, you’ll learn where they hang out. And in the Where Do Clients Hang Out lesson you’ll learn why it’s important to learn where your ideal clients are and how to approach them. For example, if you want to work with people who are in the technology field, you probably won’t find these clients on Pinterest.

All-in-all, this course is pretty good at showing you how to identify and find your VA clients and fine-tune your pitch. FYI, your pitch is you explaining what you do and how it’ll solve your client’s problem.

#8 Business School Professor

How to Start any Business

Key Features:

  • 8 hours-long, containing downloadable resources
  • Thorough business course that teaches how to start a successful company from the ground up
  • Lessons on making your business legal
  • Teaches how to protect your company and family
  • Goes over some business tax information
  • Certificate of completion
  • 30-day money-back guarantee

What I Like:

I appreciate all the information within this course, especially if I had high ambitions of starting from nothing and growing my business into a major company.

What I Don’t Like:

Some chapters and lessons were more advanced for a simple Independent Contractor type of business, for instance: how to go public, venture capital, and hedge funds.

Business School Professor Review:

This is a comprehensive business course with a cheap price tag. In it, i learned everything I needed to know to start a business from start to finish. With a focus on business concepts, you’re taught the life cycle of any sized company.

Starting with lessons on what makes a good business owner, you’ll learn how your passion & optimism affect your business decisions. Based on real-life experiences – not thoeories – the instructor goes into a lot of detail and analysis of some of the biggest CEO’s and why they are successful.

Even though this course leans a bit more towards the tech industry, the lessons are universal and can be used for any type of business.

Once you have a feel of your own business abilities, the course dives into networking and understanding financial statements. It may seem like a lot…and more than you need…But what I think is most helpful for people just starting out as an independent Virtual Assistant is the section about legally protecting your company. Because not doing so can jeopardize your home and family.
